Conservative Christians must stand their ground urges Ram Gidoomal

As the Conservatives consider their future following the General Election, the Christians in the party must stand their ground, urges the Leader of the Christian Peoples Alliance, Ram Gidoomal CBE. Commenting on the Tory leadership contest, Ram is giving a warning that the soul-searching following William Hague's resignation could lead to the loss of the good work in listening to Britain's churches under his stewardship of the party. After speaking on London's Premier Radio, Ram said:

"The Conservatives poor showing in the election has led to calls from the Conservative libertarian right for the party to back a softer stance towards drugs and a looser commitment to marriage and family responsibilities. This would be a mistake.

"Our hope is that Her Majesty's Opposition would not lose sight of the churches' teaching on these issues. Christian compassion towards people living alternative lifestyles must not be mistaken for moral neutrality, especially when the raising of children is concerned."

The Christian Peoples Alliance is Britain's first party of direct Christian inspiration and is supported by Christian Democratic parties on the continent. It chose not to fight the General Election, but in last year's Greater London Authority contest it won votes from 100,000 people, out polling the Socialist Alliance, the BNP and UKIP and qualifying the CPA for a seat on the London Assembly under proportional representation.

"Christian Democracy embraces a commitment to social and racial justice, respect for life, backing for traditional church teaching about marriage and a concern to reduce inequality in Britain and the developing world" added Ram Gidoomal. "The Conservatives would do well to learn from the radical, left-of-centre Christian Democratic tradition they have so far resisted in Europe."
